By removing the ability to replicate, Adeno associated viruses can be used as a safe tool to deliver small sequences of genetic information into neurons and other brain cells. The targeting of those neurons is highly specific and allows us to express the genes only in cells of interest. Those could be Oxytocin producing neurons or Oxytocin receptor expressing neurons in distinct regions of the brain.
